Divination using the runes

The runes came from the ancient Etruscans and spread up through the Alpine regions to Northern Europe via trade routes. The Germanic tribes took them and adapted them to their needs and requirements. The oldest and most common of the Germanic runes are the Elder Futhark or General Germanic runes. The word “rune”, which occurs in various forms in the Germanic and Celtic languages, means “mystery” or “sacred mystery” that is “whispered”.

Runes were traditionally carved from bone, wood or stone, which explains their angular shape. The lack of curves made it easier to create figures out of hard wood or stone.

These 24 Elder Futhark are divided into three groups or ettirs. Each group of eight runes can be associated with the eight directions on the horizon, with seasonal holidays and various cycles of time and stars.

Modern rune users sometimes add a twenty-fifth rune that is completely blank. This is called the Vird. This rune has no traditional or historical basis, but many find it very useful when reading. It symbolizes fate, karma, and the inevitable.

Vertical or inverted?

The nine runes are read the same way, however they fall. The remainder may fall in an inverted position if the reader prefers to use U-turns (which is by no means necessary). If you choose to use inverted runes, the value will change slightly depending on how the rune falls. In general, inverted runes indicate negative influences or situations that need to be addressed, or the need for caution. Sometimes they simply indicate that the positive effects of a rune are being diluted, weakened, or will be delayed in some way. Upside-down runes often indicate an aspect of yourself that you didn’t want to face before, but are now willing to acknowledge.
